Valve Replacement at the Pequannock Screen Building
Project Name: Valve Replacements at the Pequannock Screen Building
Construction: 2021-2022
Design Engineer: Kleinfelder
Contractor: Montana and Underground Utilities Corp
Location: Pequannock Screen Building
Cost: Over $1,000,000
Project Summary: In 1957 the City of Newark constructed the Charlotteburg reservoir/dam and the Pequannock Screen Building, located immediately downstream from the reservoir intake. The Screen Building has two main purposes; first being the removal of large debris from the raw water such as sticks and leaves. The other purpose being that it is the primary location for raw water flow rate control. The City of Newark is in a unique position due to the fact that water flows from the reservoir roughly 30 miles to the City via gravity (without any pumping). The valves at the Screen Building play a significant role in starting/stopping the water flow and precisely modulating to achieve the desired flow rate. Due to the age of the facility the valves were no longer reliable. This caused the City to replace (2) 30 inch Rotary Cone Valves and (2) 24 inch Flow Control Valves to ensure the system functions properly.
