History of Water System in Newark

Since the creation of the Newark Aqueduct in 1800, the Department of Water and Sewer Utilities has been a fundamental part of the City of Newark. The graphic below outlines a chronology of landmark events in the history of the City of Newark’s water system, and how they helped shape the development of the city.

Today, the City owns and operates a water system that provides potable water supply for the purposes of domestic consumption, commercial and industrial use, and fire protection. Retail service is provided through the municipal limits of the City and a portion of Belleville. Wholesale supply is provided to Elizabeth, East Orange, Bloomfield, Wayne, and Pequannock. The system delivers, on average 77 million gallons per day (MGD) of supply through over 600 miles of transmission and distribution mains.
