Permits and Prices

All residents and private companies must obtain approval from the City of Newark Department of Water and Sewer Utilities prior to performing any work that directly or indirectly affects the public water and/or sewer systems. The Department’s Permit and Inspections Office is the starting point for all of Water and Sewer permit services. The Permit and Inspections Office can provide you with mapping of the existing water and sewer infrastructure and can answer many of your questions. If you have general permitting questions please call 973-733-3896

When a project involving Newark’s Water and Sewer Department begins, all parties involved are subject to standard inspection and application fees. These fees cover the cost of reviewing and accepting a submitted application, as well as the cost of a water/sewer line inspection. Routine fees will occur on every project, regardless of its complexity. Please reference the chart below for all routine fees.

Depending on the complexity of the project, additional fees may be required for non-routine work. The list below is a collection of fees that you may be subject to if you are completing a project that requires assistance from the City of Newark’s Water and Sewer Department. Additional fees may not happen on every project, but could occur based on the type of work you are doing. Please look at the list below for all additional fees.

Overtime fees will be required on work that requires technical assistance, or where a water & sewer inspector works overtime. These fees rarely occur on projects but will be used in cases where additional assistance from the Water and Sewer Department is required. A meeting between the contractor, homeowner, and the Department of Water and Sewer is required for projects in need of technical assistance to determine pricing.

When completing a project that involves tapping into the city water main line, the homeowner will need to pay fees associated with creating a new connection between the water main and their residence. The list of water tap fees below are only used on projects where the homeowner needs to create a new connection between their home and the water main. In addition to water tap fees, a water meter will need to be purchased from the Water and Sewer Department. The list of water tap fees and meter prices can be found below.
