Operational Upgrades of the Pequannock Water Treatment Plant

Project Name: Process and Operational Upgrades at the Pequannock Water Treatment Plant

Construction: 2021-Ongoing

Design Engineer: Kleinfelder

Contractor: Spectraserv

Location: Pequannock Water Treatment Plant

Cost: Over $19,000,000

Project Summary: The primary source of water for the City of Newark comes from the Pequannock Water Treatment Plant located in West Milford. The Pequannock WTP was brought online in 1990 and features 12 dual media filters with a maximum capacity of 60 million gallons per day (MGD). Due to the continued tightening of regulations and aging infrastructure the Pequannock WTP currently only has a maximum capacity of 40 MGD. Therefore the City moved to complete the Process and Operational Upgrades project which will be the largest project at the Pequannock WTP since its original construction. The project scope is inclusive of more than 50 large valve replacements, 9 new pumps, new filter underdrains/troughs, installation of filter GAC media, new air scour system, and a state of the art computer control system. When complete this project will improve the efficiency of the treatment process, optimize water quality, and increase plant production capacity.
