Adopt a Storm Drain

*Formerly known as ‘Adopt a Catch Basin’

Why should I keep my storm drain clean?

Keeping storm drains clean helps prevent local street flooding, improves water quality, and reduces the trash and debris that pollute our waterways.

What is a storm drain?

Storm drains, also known as ‘catch basins’, collect rainfall or water from melting snow.

There are over 6,000 storm drains in the City of Newark! These drains carry that water from Newark streets to a nearby treatment plant or our local rivers.

How do I get started?

Adopt A Storm Drain FAQs

  • The City of Newark is requesting at least a year-long commitment. If you can no longer care for your storm drain, please let us know so we can update our records.

A rain barrel attaches to your home’s gutter system to collect and store rainwater. The water can be used for watering your lawn or garden, washing your car, and other outdoor uses.

Why should I get a rain barrel for my home?

Rain barrels are a great way to prevent local street flooding and reduce runoff pollution of our local waterways.

By owning a rain barrel, you can also save on your water bill!
