When hydrant flushing takes place on your block, you may experience temporary brown water or low water pressure.
Wait 45 minutes, or until hydrant flushing is over, and then run your tap until the water runs clear.
About twice a year, hydrant flushing is performed citywide by the City of Newark Fire Division and the Department of Water & Sewer Utilities.
Hydrant flushing is necessary to remove sediment from water pipes, maintain high water quality, and ensure fire hydrants are working properly. Flushing can take anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes.
Spot an open fire hydrant, but don’t think it’s us? Report it at (973) 733-3655.
If you believe you are experiencing a water emergency, please call (973) 733-3655.
We thank all Newark residents for their patience as the city works to maintain water quality and ensure reliable infrastructure ahead of the winter season.
